Abhi Ramesh didn’t set out to disrupt the grocery industry. He was just frustrated.
On an apple-picking trip, he watched rows of perfectly edible fruit get thrown out for not looking the part. That moment stuck and eventually sparked what would become one of the most mission-driven growth stories in modern commerce.
Abhi is the Founder and CEO of Misfits Market, a brand built on the idea that imperfect produce still has a place on your plate. He’s joining the Beanstalk community, and his story is a clear example of what happens when sharp execution meets real-world values.
Backed by a Wharton education and early experience in venture and operations, Abhi launched Misfits Market at just 26.
What began as a scrappy effort to rescue misshapen fruits and vegetables has grown into one of the country’s fastest-scaling online grocers.
In 2022, Misfits Market acquired its largest rival, Imperfect Foods, bringing together two category-defining food waste platforms.
Together, the brands have raised over $750 million, are approaching $1 billion in annual sales, and have saved close to 500 million pounds of food from going to waste.
Proof that meaningful environmental impact and serious business performance don’t have to be at odds.
Abhi started Misfits Market in part because he wanted to eat healthier. The irony? He built a grocery business before learning how to cook.
Today, he still orders a Misfits box each week and cooks with it himself, though he’s quick to admit he’s not exactly a natural in the kitchen. Most meals end with a scoop of ice cream, which as he puts it is the “balanced diet of a founder."
Abhi’s story is grounded, intentional, and quietly bold. He’s shown how a focused, operationally disciplined company can challenge industry norms, make a dent in food waste, and build a billion-dollar business in the process.
